evonia “Vonnie” Evans, Senior Nevonia Evans, Sr., better known as Vonnie, was born on February 6, 1948, in Washington, DC. He was the first born of five children to Joseph Evans and Lula Mae Mackey Evans Williams. As a child he spent a lot of time with his family in Alabama and South Carolina, but eventually settled back home in Washington, DC. and attended Eastern High School. He held positions at the Department of Commerce, a law firm, home health care and a transportation provider. He attended Saint Juda Baptist Church, where he accepted Christ in his life and sang on the church’s choir. Vonnie took pride in being the most gracious host. If you ever visited his home he would cook you up a delicious meal and make sure you were very comfortable. Vonnie was an avid sports fan, with his all-time favorite team being the Washington, Redskins. He was loyal to his home team through their wins and losses, gladly challenging anyone if they ever tried to talk against them. Music was a heavy influence in Vonnie’s life. He loved listening to the oldie but goodies R&B jams. Vonnie was always the life of the party, constantly making his way to the dance floor to do a one-two step. He was a joy to be around and his friends and family loved his generous spirit. He would offer you the coat off his back. Vonnie was a devoted and nurturing father. He was the primary caretaker of his two youngest sons. He sacrificed a lot to be the best father he could be for his children. He loved all his children dearly and was a major part of their lives. Earlier this year, he received the unfortunate news of his cancer diagnosis. He was gearing up for a fight for his life, but even the strongest fighters must rest. On August 2, 2020, God chose to take him home and he peacefully passed away at Howard University Hospital, early in the morning before the break of dawn. Vonnie was preceded in death by his mother, father and his daughters, Rona Evans and Shanta Evans. He leaves behind five children, Nevonia Evans, Jr. “Nicky” (Brigitte), Maurice Evans, Ardrea Johnson, Nevonia Evans, III “Boomie” and Davon Evans, two sisters, Linda Evans and Gail Evans Brown Campbell, two brothers, Joseph Young (JoAnn), Frank Evans (Tanisha), one step-brother Ray Williams, eight grandchildren, with one on the way, three great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and close friends that will cherish his memory.
