orman Willis Lee, Jr., a resident of Edgewater since 1966, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was 78.
Born April 4, 1935 in Washington, DC, Norman graduated from Annapolis High School, Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and the Air Force Institute of Technology with a Master of Science in aeronautical engineering. He served in the United States Air Force from 1957 – 1983, retiring with the rank of Colonel. He received the Legion of Merit for his work as the USAF Deputy Director of Technology. He was an avid runner and completed over 50 marathons, including two 36 mile ultra-marathons. Norman was selected to be part of the 2009 Medtronic Global Heroes team that celebrates active individuals with medical implants. Norman summited Mount Kilimanjaro in 2008 and enjoyed hiking the Grand Canyon with his wife Lynn. His hobbies were weightlifting, scuba diving, boating, traveling and his parrot, Paddy.
He was preceded in death by his former wife, Jacqueline Lee; one brother, David Lee; and a grandson, William Hike Bagdasian.
Norman is survived by his wife of 10 years, Lynn M. Lee; two sons, Norman Lee III of Edgewater and Scott Lee of Bowie; one daughter, Cheryl Collyer of Columbus, GA; one sister, Martha Collison of Mayo; six grandchildren, Norman Lee IV, Justin Lee, Adam & Joanna Bagdasian, Jackie Belcher, Claudia Lee; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to Norman's Celebration of Life on Tuesday, March 4 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 5 at 10 am. The interment will be at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.
