Paul Hines - Obituary

C

oach Paul “Doc” Hines, the assistant coach featured in the Disney movie “Remember the Titans,” has died. He was 74. Paul Lorenzo Hines was born on August 26, 1937, in the Campostella area of Norfolk Virgina to Isaiah and Lottie Hines. He was a resident of Fort Washington, Maryland, for 42 years, until he passed away at Genesis Crescent Cities Center on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 12:10 p.m. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Jacqueline Toliver Hines, his daughter Paula Hines Lonergan with son-in-law Daniel, his son Michael Lorenzo Hines and his favorite daughter-in-law, Julie, and their daughter Jeri, one brother Leland Hines and his wife Pearl, three nephews and two neices, along with countless inlaws and cousins, along with a host of friends, fellow coaches, players, teachers and students who all loved the man they called, "the Buzzard", "Doc" or simply Mr. Hines. Sports was one thing that he truly loved as he played baseball, softball and football when he was young. In 1955, he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia and then went on to play football at Virginia State College. After graduating in 1959, he worked as a teacher, baseball and basketball coach at King George High School in King George, Virginia, where he met his wife, Jackie. After teaching in King George, Virginia and Charles County, Maryland, he then began working for the Alexandria Public School System in Alexandria, Virginia. He was a physical education and health teacher for 39 years and he also had the opportunity to coach football and basketball at his beloved T. C. Williams High School, home of the Titans, for several decades both as an assistant and head coach. He was known to motivate his players by saying, “if you don’t mind, then it don’t matter”. In 1999, he retired from teaching. He was one of the coaches featured in the Disney movie, "Remember the Titans" about the legendary 1971 T.C. Williams Titans football team. Always a people person, he would light up a room with his hardy laugh and jovial personality. He truly was the life of a party. He was a good provider who loved to spend time with his family. He enjoyed cooking, eating crabs, fishing with his father, son and others, playing cards with his lifelong friends, hosting backyard BBQ's, and tailgaiting both at Redskins games and his alma mater, Virginia State College during homecoming. He was a kind, loving and loyal man to his family and friends. He always provided you an encouraging word and a broad shoulder to cry on, as his heart was as big as they come. He always maintained a positive and upbeat spirit, even during the darkest of days. He would always say, "tomorrow, the sun is going to rise, so you might as well rise up with it." There is so much more that was contained in the life of Paul Hines, that it all cannot be relayed here. But each of us will hold dear in our hearts and minds our own memories of Paul “Doc” the “Buzzard” Hines. Memorial Service for Paul "Doc" Hines Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 1:00 PM T.C.
