P

aul Walter Kolody, 63, a 7-year resident of Edgewater and former resident of Gambrills for 20 years, died suddenly on Thursday, May 10, 2012 of a pulmonary embolism. Paul had also battled Parkinson’s Disease for over 20 years. Paul graduated from Smithtown High School in 1967. He attended the United States Naval Academy where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1971. He also earned a Master's Degree in Nuclear Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972, and a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1982. Paul served in the United States Navy on the USS Tinosa and USS Parche nuclear submarines, and later flew helicopters with the Maryland Air National Guard. Following his military career, Paul worked at the Westinghouse Research and Development Center in Churchill, PA and then at Northrop Grumman until his retirement in 2008. In his free time, he loved flying and spent many hours as a private flight instructor, teaching single and multi-engine flight. Paul also enjoyed shooting sport clays and, with his wife, traveled to and shot in 47 states. He loved spending time with his dog, Hazel, until her passing last month. Paul is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Jill Kolody, whom he married in 1972; a son, Andrew Kolody of Wheaton; a daughter, Allison Buonocore, her husband, Todd , and grandson, Paxton, of Hockessin, DE; a sister, Carolyn Lepak and her husband, Tom ,of Ocean View, DE; his mother-in-law, biggest fan and buddy, Dorothea Richardson; his longtime family friend and godparent to his children, Marylou Murry; his in-laws, Janice and John Staudt, JoAnn and Bob Gushue, Edward Richardson, Kenneth and Valerie Richardson and Steven and Kathy Richardson. Friends are invited to Paul's Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater on Monday, May 14 from 6 to 8pm.
