aul Andrew White January 30, 1925 - December 12, 2023 Paul A. White, a 76-year resident of Silver Spring, MD and previously of Washington, D.C., died at Lorien Harmony Hall, Columbia, MD on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. Born January 30, 1925, in Washington, D.C., to the late William A. and Helen A. (Sharp) White. He attended Holy Comforter Grade School and St. Paul’s High School. Paul worked for Hardesty’s Market, 1504 E. Capitol St., Washington, D.C. starting at age 13 as a delivery boy, then butcher and eventually manager. After the riots of 1968 he went to work for his brother-in-law, Dominic Carrera as Manager at Pizza Fair, Springfield, VA, and finally at Giant Foods, Silver Spring, MD. Paul enlisted in the Navy and served his country from 1943 to 1946 aboard the USS Lake (DE-301), an Evarts-class destroyer escort of the United States Navy, during World War II. She was sent off into the Pacific Ocean to protect convoys and other ships from Japanese submarines and fighter aircraft. She performed escort and anti-submarine operations in dangerous battle areas and returned home with two battle stars. Paul was awarded a Bronze Medal. Paul was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Isabella (Carrera) White, his eldest daughter, Dorothea (White) Koehler, Grandson, Bryan O’Hare, Great-Grandson, Christian Andrew Axtell, his siblings Alice, Billy, Bobby, Jimmy, Teddy, Ellen, Mary, Catherine, Tommy, Teresa, Franny, John, Bernie and Dot. Paul is survived by his children, Paul M. White of Silver Spring, MD, Helen Ambrose of Ellicott City, MD, Laura (Joe) O’Hare of Highland, MD and Maria (Paul) Taltavull of Bethany Beach, DE. Grandchildren, Jennifer and Katie O’Hare, Patrick and Michael Taltavull, Joseph Ambrose and Bridgette (Ambrose) Axtell. Great-Grandchildren, Peyton, Patrick, Avery and Jackson Taltavull Relatives and friends are invited to Paul's Life Celebration at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 15663 Norbeck Blvd., Silver Spring, MD on Wednesday, December 20 from 10:30 a.m. until the start of the Mass of Christian Burial is held at 11:30 a.m. The interment will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD.
