eter Marios Cavas, 82, a resident of Annapolis for 10 years, died Jan. 12 at his home after battling a brain tumor. Mr. Cavas was born Nov. 3, 1925, in Providence, R. I., and moved to the Washington, D.C., area after World War II. He moved to Crofton in 1979. A graduate of Brown University in Providence, he was a career employee of the Census Bureau, performing key roles in national Civil Defense assessment and in computerizing the bureau in the 1970s. On a temporary assignment to the Agency for International Development's International Statistical Program, he and his family lived in Karachi, Pakistan. Mr. Cavas later took on several unaccompanied tours of duty in southern Africa and Pakistan. After transferring to the Office of Management and Budget, he retired in 1981. Mr. Cavas served as an officer in the Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. During a busy retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively around the world and were active in the Heritage Harbour community, appearing often in local stage productions. A first-generation American, he was the son of Greek immigrants, the late Thomas and Georgia Cavas. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Nicholas Cavas; and two sisters, Vivian Gikas and Frances Skoutas. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Barbara Lewellyn Cavas; one son, Christopher Cavas of Bethesda; one daughter, Cathryn Georgia Strobel of Sugar Land, Texas; and three granddaughters. Family and friends may join in the celebration of his life from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2747 Riva Road in Annapolis. Interment will follow in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401 or the Heritage Harbour Chorus, 959 River Strand Loop, Annapolis, MD 21401.
