P

hilip “Phil” Ayres Dales, Jr., age 85, a 24-year resident of Annapolis, MD and previously of Rockville, MD died on March 23, 2009 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home after a 2-year illness Born November 27, 1923 in Harrisonburg, PA, to the late Jeanette Dales Dunning and Philip A. Dales, he graduated from Central High School in Washington, DC. Mr. Dales was a PFC in Company E in the 109th Infantry of the United States Army. He landed on Omaha Beach during the second wave of the Normandy Invasion. He served with distinction and was awarded the following medals: Two Purple Hearts for wounds received, Distinguished Unit Badge, Croix de Guerre, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. After leaving the Army Philip was employed by the National Weather Service, NOAA. He retired from Supervisory Communications Management in 1988. During his tenure at the National Weather Service, Philip was instrumental in the development of the Hurricane Prediction Communication System. His memberships included being a parishioner at St. Paul's Anglican Church; Commander at the Annapolis Disabled American Veterans, Heritage Harbour Golf Club , the Heritage Harbour Television Committee and the Elks. His hobbies included jazz, bowling, fishing, square dancing and golfing at Heritage Harbour. He was the beloved husband of the late M. Lynn Carter Dales, whom he married on September 16, 1947 and she died on January 31, 2002; devoted father of Philip A. Dales, III of Annapolis, MD, Kathleen D. Baker of Chester, MD and Patricia D. Orenstein of Laurel, MD; also survived by 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.Friends are invited to Mr. Dale's Life Celebration on Saturday, March 28 at 4:00 P.M. at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 1505 Crownsville Road (Crownsville Road & Rt. 178), Crownsville, MD, with a reception to follow in the parish hall. Interment private.
