Phuong Do - Obituary

HUONG VU DO, the former owner and manager of the Oriental Gardens Restaurant in Forest Plaza, Forest Drive, and longtime resident of Annapolis, died on Dec 25,2014. She was 84. Mrs. Do was born in Vietnam where she grew up and knew war and famine, got married and founded a family in 1948. In 1968 after calculated risks together with her husband and 4 of their 6 children, the Do's emigrated to the United States where they first settled in Washington D.C. For 2 years she worked as a Vietnamese language instructor for the U.S. Armed Forces -but her dream was to open a restaurant. In 1970, the Do family moved to Annapolis where they opened what was once known as the first Vietnamese restaurant, The Oriental Gardens in Forest Plaza. Until its final closing in 1995, Mrs. Do was the driving force and the managing presence behind this family business, where every member of the Do Family worked at one point in their life. She was a lady of great determination, a survivor with strict self-discipline and high values, but also a person of gentle demeanor and quiet dignity. A devout Buddhist, Mrs. Do devoted most of her life to the studies of the Enlightened Path and the teachings of the Buddha. She will be missed by all those who knew her. She is the beloved wife of Loc Dinh Do; mother of six children and their spouses, Sy and Thanh-HuongDo, Dung and Kim Dzung Do, Tue Trang (Trini) and Jean-Yves Folliot, Tue Huong (Anna) and Klaus Troemel, Hiep Do, Tue Van and Edward Colucci. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and numerous relatives across the Unites States and around the world, namely in France, Luxembourg, Vietnam, China. Friends may call at the George Kalas Funeral Home, 2793 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Friday, January 2 from 11:30am to 2pm and from 5:30pm to 8pm and on Saturday, January 3 from 11:30am to 2pm.
