R

aymond Leonard Evans, Jr., of South River Colony in Edgewater, MD, died from complications of a cerebral hemorrhage on December 23, 2010. Ray was born in Baltimore City on October 2, 1929. He is the son of the late Raymond L. Evans, Sr. and Emma Foard Evans. He was raised in Hamilton and Towson, attending Baltimore City College and graduating from Washington College in Chestertown, MD in 1952. He began his business career as a sales representative for the old Sherwood Brothers Oil Company, later moving to Allstate Insurance where he retired in 1996 as a senior accountant agent. While employed at Allstate, Ray won many awards and trips, among them the Good Hands Award for community outreach, and the Honor Ring sales award. Upon retirement, Mr. Evans took his personality and skills to Meals on Wheels, where he was recognized as Volunteer of the Year. He was still an active volunteer until the time of his sudden death. He enjoyed boating and traveling with his family, although his greatest passion was jazz and Big Band music. Above all, Ray was known for his humor and innate ability to make others smile. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Lee (Betty) Evans nee Radcliffe; three children, Sandra Lee Meyers of Severna Park, Raymond L. Evans, III of Clayton, NC and Robert Alexander Evans of Baltimore City; five grandchildren, Kelly Elizabeth and Bryan Alexander Meyers of Severna Park, Caroline Elysse Evans of Frisco, TX, Raymond L. Evans, IV and Zachary Alexander Evans of Clayton, NC. The family will be receiving friends at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm on December 29, 2010. Funeral service will be held at 10:30am on December 30, 2010 at All Hallows Episcopal Church, 3604 Solomon's Island Road, Edgewater. A private interment will be at Old Wye Parish, Wye Mills, MD. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Pediatric Cardiology Unit at University Hospital, 22 S Greene St., Baltimore, MD 21201.
