aymond N. Zimmerman Jr., 82, an educator with Prince George's County Public Schools, died Jan. 19 at his home in Upper Marlboro after a heart attack. When Mr. Zimmerman retired in 1984, he was the career development coordinator for the Board of Education, a position he had held since 1975. He started working for the school system in 1962 and was a guidance counselor at Surrattsville High School in Clinton and Friendly High School in Fort Washington. From 1964 to 1970, he was the vice principal at John Hanson Junior High School in Oxon Hill. Raymond Nathan Zimmerman Jr., a native of Philadelphia, received a bachelor's degree in horticulture from Cornell University in 1950 and a master's degree in education from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1957. He served in the Army from 1950 to 1952. He was a teacher in Pennsylvania before moving to the Washington area in 1962. He was a past-president of the Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and in 1998 was honored with the society's Minuteman Award. He volunteered with Prince George's Hospital Center, the Prince George's Arts Council and the National Zoo. His marriage to Marion Vernon Zimmerman ended in divorce. Survivors include two daughters, Jan Zimmerman of Phoenix and Brooke Z. Kuperman of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a sister; and three granddaughters. There will be a memorial service on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 11am at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 199 Duke of Gloucester Street Annapolis, MD 21401. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.
