ebecca “Becky” Weathers Dukes, 88, a longtime resident of Hyattsville, MD died on Sunday, November 19 at her home. Born on November 21, 1934, in Durham, NC to the late Elmer and Rebecca Weathers, Becky was a 1956 graduate of Duke University. Following graduation Becky married her high school sweetheart, Charlie, and worked as a teacher until her second child was born. During the 1970-90’s Becky was singer/songwriter and studied voice under Todd Duncan. She recorded 5 Cd’s over many years and performed all over the Washington DC area until her early 80’s. Becky was highly active in her community, serving as president of the National Capital Law League and the Prince George’s County Arts Council. As a member of Riverdale Presbyterian Church, she served as president of the Women of the Church. Becky was recognized in the book, The Women of Achievement in Prince George’s County. Becky is survived by her husband, Charles A. Dukes, Jr.; her children, David Dukes (Rachida Dukes) of Hyattsville, MD, Charles Dukes (Terri Dukes) of College Park, MD and Aurelia (Reann) Dukes (Richard Hodges) of Sonoma, CA; her grandchildren, Travis Powers (Sue Ellen Powers), Adrienne Dukes Craver (Justin Craver), Charles Dukes and Adam Hodges (Arianna Hodges); 4 great-grandchildren: Hadley, Peyton, Julia and Jace. The family is forever grateful for Becky’s beloved long-time caregivers, Joy Nju-Atem, and Joyce Pearson Wandick. A memorial service will be held at The First Baptist Church of Glenarden, January 20 at 1:00pm. A reception will follow. The address is: 600 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Hospice of Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties, or the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.
