Reggie Ashley - Obituary

R

eggie Joseph Ashley, 84, a 10-year resident of Chestertown, MD and previously of Davidsonville, MD died August 17, 2012 at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of heart failure after a 4 month illness. Born August 1, 1928 in Ashe County, NC to the late Charlie Columbus and Lula (Roten) Ashley, he employed for Asplundh Tree Service, as a tree surgeon, for 30 years before he became injured in 1977. Upon becoming a permanent resident at the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Reggie became a warrior in the clutches of a terrible accident that left him a paraplegic. He left his mark on everyone that he touched during his stay at the nursing home. Before many staff members left for work on Reggie's last day, they came by to say their final farewells. It made us, his children, very proud of what our father had accomplished with this friendship. Reggie enjoyed woodworking, yard work and CB radio. He was predeceased by his wife, Jennie R. Ashley, whom he married on December 31, 1951 and who died on November 27, 2002. Reggie is survived by three sons, William Washburn Jr. of Elba, AL, Robert Morris of Norfolk, VA and Doug Ashley of Chestertown, MD; two daughters, Carol Wolfe of Lake Lure, NC and Barbara Goldenberg of Richmond, VA; three sisters, Del Ray Phillips of West Jefferson, NC, Edna Ashley of West Jefferson, NC and Mary Nell Osborne of Lansing, NC; three grandsons, Tracy Washburn of Chester, MD, Daniel Wolfe of Asheville, NC and Steven Poirier of Seoul, South Korea; four granddaughters, Mickie Mowbray of Grasonville, MD, Barbara Anne Sutelan of Norfolk, VA, Laurie Anne D'Angelo of Norfolk, VA and Katie Jones of Jacksonville, NC. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to Reggie's Life Celebration on Monday, August 20 from 10am until his funeral service begins at 11am at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. Interment Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Human Society of Kent County, 10720 Augustine Herman Highway, Chestertown, MD 21620.
