ené Isaias Escobar Chica, 30, of Sterling, VA and previously of Annapolis, MD, passed away on May 27, 2021 due to complications from Leukemia. He was born on May 5, 1991 in Quayaquil, Ecuador to Idis G. Chica and the late René Escobar. René began his college studies at Anne Arundel Community College where he was the recipient of the Diane (Mom) Phelps Scholarship in March 2010 and the Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship in October 2013. René also received an Honors List Certificate. In December 2010, he became a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and served as Vice President of Fellowship for the Omicron Theta Chapter. In May 2014, René received the University of Maryland’s Transfer Academic Excellence Scholarship in May 2014 and entered the University’s Robert H. Smith School of Business the following Fall semester. René completed his studies in May 2016, earning dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Information Systems. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a final GPA of 3.931. He went on to become a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Virginia. While studying for his degrees, René worked as a bank teller for BB&T in Annapolis. After graduation, he entered the firm of Deloitte & Touch LLP in McLean, VA as an Audit Assitant. He advanced to Audit Senior before departing in March 2021 to join Geico’s Internal Audit office in Chevy Chase, MD as a Senior Auditor. Sadly, René only worked with Geico for two months before his death. René was a member of the UMD Chapter of the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) and the National Honor Society. René loved studying, especially learning new languages; he studied French in college. He also enjoyed video games, traveling to new places and Anime. Survivors include René’s companion and partner, Brandon L. Scruggs of Sterling, VA; his mother, Idis Chica of Annapolis, a brother, Samuel Escobar of Arnold, MD and a sister, Rebeca Escobar also of Annapolis. A funeral service will be held at 1PM on Saturday, June 5 at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
