EX S. CALDWELL, JR., a resident of Annapolis died January 24, 2010 at Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House in Harwood, Maryland from complications related to cancer. Rex was born October 15, 1932 in San Diego, California to the late Captain Rex S. Caldwell, Sr., and Elizabeth Chase Caldwell. He was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1955, earning an Engineering Degree. He was among five generations in his family to have graduated from the United States Naval Academy. In 1955, he married, the love of his life, Dorothy Virginia Caldwell. After serving in the United States Navy, Rex worked for over 25 years at Westinghouse and later began another career working for the National Security Agency from which he retired. During his career he developed and managed engineering support programs and technical manuals. Rex enjoyed playing golf and following and watching his beloved Baltimore Colts and St. Louis Cardinals. His second passions and hobbies were Mercedes Benz automobiles, watches and completing the New York Times crossword and Sudoku puzzles. He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Michael E. Caldwell and Captain James Franklin (Pooch) Caldwell. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy V. Caldwell of Annapolis; a daughter, Kathleen V. Caldwell-Lombardi, M.D. and her husband, Carl Lombardi, of West Caldwell, New Jersey; a son, Rex S. Caldwell, III, Esq. of Annapolis; two grandchildren, Jacob Carl Lombardi and Cayla Rose Lombardi of West Caldwell, New Jersey; and his sisters, Elizabeth Caldwell Thunman of Fairfax, Virginia and Valentine Caldwell Tyler, of Great Falls, Virginia. He also loved and is survived by his sisters in law, brothers in law and many nieces and nephews and friends. Inurnment will be held at the United States Naval Academy Cemetery Columbarium on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. If you plan to attend the inurnment you must provide photo identification and enter through Gate #8.
