ichard Mallery "Dick" Armstrong, 75, a resident of Annapolis for 12 years and previously of Gaithersburg, died of pneumonia Jan. 8 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a two-month illness.
Mr. Armstrong was born Aug. 3, 1932, in Penn Whynn, Pa., to the late John and Mildred Oliver Armstrong. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied electrical engineering.
He worked for 38 years for IBM in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and in Gaithersburg as a capacity planner.
Mr. Armstrong taught sailing, and at 17, he and his crew won the All American Rowing Competition for Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania.
He came down with polio in 1949, and while he did recover, he began to experience post-polio syndrome 40 years later.
A life-long sailing enthusiast, he was a member of the Severn Sailing Association and previously a commodore of Chelsea Yacht, N.Y. He was also a 50-year member of the U.S. Power Squadron.
He loved his dog.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Lillian Stevens Armstrong.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 19 at All Hallows Episcopal Church, 864 W. Central Ave. in Davidsonville.
