ichard “Dick” A. Barnard, Sr., an 18-year resident of Heritage Harbour in Annapolis and previously of Brentwood, MD, died at his home on Thursday, March 31, from complications of Dementia.
Born May 14, 1920 in Washington, D.C., Dick was a graduate of Mt. Rainier High School and served in the U.S. Navy as a Carpenters Mate 3rd class. He was a career fireman and retired as Fire Chief from the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda. He spent his life helping others and was known as a “go to guy” for his family, colleagues and all who knew him.
Dick was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Mt. Rainier Police Department, Brentwood Town Council, Life Member of the Mt. Rainier Fire Department and a former Prince George’s County Fire Commissioner. In his spare time Dick enjoyed golf, bowling and jigsaw puzzles.
Dick was predeceased by his wife, Mary G. Barnard who he married on November 6, 1940 and who died on March 4, 2009. He is survived by three sons, Richard A. Barnard, Jr. of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Thomas M. (Kathryn) Barnard of Glen Dale, MD and James P. (Jeanne) Barnard; six daughters, Barbara A. Gretz of Arnold, MD, Margaret A. (Walter) Hampton of Brentwood, MD, Susan M. Barnard of Ocean City, MD, Janice M. (Jeffrey) Boggs of Bowie, MD, Mary J. (Craig) Kirker of Annapolis, MD and Kathryn A. (Rick Boyer) Barnard of Grasonville, MD, eighteen grandchildren and twenty three great grandchildren
Friends are invited to Dick’s Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Sunday, April 3 from 2 to 4 and 6 to8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 6 at 9:00am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Annapolis, MD. Interment Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Hwy., Annapolis, MD 21401.
