ichard “Rich†Alan Mackey, Sr., 65, a resident of Crofton, MD for over 30 years, died September 2, 2008 at Johns Hopkins University Hospital from complications from pneumonia after a 6 week illness. Born May 15, 1943 in Poughkeepsie, NY, he attended Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York, where he received a B.S. in Mathematics in 1965. He received his M.B.A. in 1966 from the University of Pittsburgh. After a brief period of working for IBM, he joined the United States Navy where he was commissioned in 1967 and was later promoted to Lt. While in the Navy he was awarded the Navy Achievement Award for his work on the development and implementation of computerized systems. He joined the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, now Freddie Mac, in Washington, D.C. in 1971 where he rose to the Executive Vice President. In 1983, he joined the law firm of Venable, LLC as their first Executive. He was active in various PTA's, served on three county wide planning commissions and was president of the Crofton Swim and Tennis Club from 1985-1988. He was also appointed by the county executive to the Anne Arundel County Development Services Corporation, a housing partnership supporting the housing needs of county residents. Beloved husband of Susan Siefert Mackey, whom he married on June 12, 1971; father of Maria Moye of Westfield, NJ, Richard Alan Mackey, Jr. of Ellicott City, MD, Lisa Mackey of Arlington, VA and James Mackey of Crofton, MD; brother of Robert Mackey of Davidsonville, MD; he is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Jack and Ryan Moye and Andrea and Allsyon Mackey. Friends are invited to Richard's Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Thursday and Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, September 6 at 9:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD. Entombment Lakemont Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Arundel Volunteer Fire Department, Station #7, 2380 Davidsonville Road, Gambrills, MD 21054.
