ichard “Richie” S Poston
Richard Sumpter Poston, 89 of Davidsonville, MD died November 16 of heart failure.
Richie was born on December 27, 1922 in Washington, DC to the late Sumpter Silcott and Ida Bell Thomas Poston. One of nine children, he attended Eastern High School in Washington DC where he graduated in 1941. He played basketball at American University and also played on the old Heurich Brewers baseball team. He had a passion for all sports and was a lifelong Redskin fan. In 2005 he was inducted into the “Jocks’ Hall of Fame”. He was a better than average duckpin bowler. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII on the SS Mechanicsville. After the war he went to work for the US Postal System in Washington DC where he retired in 1969. He is preceded in death by sisters, Irma Poston, Virginia “Jinx” White, Jeanne Poston Viqueria, and Betty Poston Tucker, and brothers, John W. Poston and Robert “Bobby” Poston. He is survived by two sisters, Doris P Henry, of California, and Gertude P Shymansky of Edgewater, and many nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews. Memorial service and committal will be Friday December 2 at 10:30 am at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery Chapel in Bladensburg, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
