ichard Louis Smith, III died in an auto accident on September 23, 2020. Born on July 4, 1956 in Leonardtown, MD to the late Mary Mueller and Richard Louis Smith, Jr., Richard attended DeMatha Catholic High School in 1971 and 1972 and graduated from Southern High School in Harwood, MD in 1974. He attended the University of Maryland and subsequently worked for advertising firms in Annapolis and Baltimore. He and his late wife, Julia Q. Giancristoforo Smith, started their own ad agency, Smith and Associates, following their marriage in 1989. They built their business on the same site as their home in Stevenson, MD, where they raised their daughter, Augusta “Gus”. Following Julia’s death in 2006, Richard helped form a new ad agency business, GAGA Marketing, with partners, Mark Elmore, Marianne Marino and Earl Galleher, where Richard served as the Creative Director. In early 2020 Richard retired and was planning to move to Raleigh, NC to be near Gus and her fiancé, Nick Iodice. Richard enjoyed numerous 4th of July birthday family picnics, high school soccer and golf. He leaves behind his beloved daughter, Augusta Rachel Smith; his siblings, Elaine (Yves) Nollet, Janet (Tom) O’Connor, Regina (Buck) Towne and Dennis (Beth) Smith; his best friend, Eddie Koebke; his girlfriend, Carol Ann Gooley; his aunts, Dorothy Smith, Loretta Orwig and Peggy Adams, 30 first cousins, a large extended family and friends who stuck with him through thick and thin. In addition to his wife and parents, Richard was preceded in death by his great friend, John Miller. There are no formal memorial gatherings planned at this time. St. John DeMatha Pray for Us
