obert John Lambird, 83, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, died November 14, 2014 with his family by his side. Bob was born June 29, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois to Clifford David Lambird and Katherine Lucille McCluskey. Bob joined the Navy in 1951, and served as a Navy medic attached to the 1st Marine Division in the Korean War, where he earned a Purple Heart with 2 Gold Stars. Bob earned degrees in chemical engineering and accounting from the University of Washington and the University of Maryland, and was a licensed Professional Engineer and CPA. Bob married Patricia Davis on January 9, 1954 in Reno, Nevada.
Bob worked for various organizations including Aerojet, RCA, Martin-Marietta, NASA, the Naval Underwater Sound Laboratory, and the University of New York. He retired from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, in 1990. In retirement, Bob volunteered for several veteran’s organizations including the American Legion, The Military Order of the Purple Heart, and The Forty and Eight. Bob received the Distinguished Service Award for Commander – Department of Maryland from the Military Order of the Purple Heart in 2007. He also served as a Commissioner on the Prince George’s County Commission for Veterans for several years. Bob also enjoyed spending time with his family, and indulged his interest in photography.
Bob is survived by his children Barbara (Bob Cates), Thomas, Steven (Pam), Diana (Dave Cyphers), and Richard Lambird, his grandchildren (Beth Gonzalez, Patrick Cates, Zoe and Dylan Cyphers, and Ryan Lambird), and two great grandchildren (Noah and Samuel Gonzalez). Bob’s wife, Pat, preceded him in death on June 18, 2009.
Services will be held at Arlington Cemetery on March19, 2015 at 1 pm.
