he Honorable Robert H. Mason, retired Prince George’s County Circuit Court Judge, passed away on June 30, 2018 at his home in Lothian, MD. He was 79 years old. Born on July 9, 1938 in Washington, DC to the late William and Florence Mason, Judge Mason grew up in Riverdale and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1955 to 1959. Following his military service, he pursued a law degree at the University of Maryland. His career in public service included serving as a Maryland Assistant State’s Attorney, Juvenile Court Master and District Court Judge. He also was a professor of legal studies at Prince George's Community College. Judge Mason was a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, Terrapin Club and Old South Country Club. He was actively involved in the Bowie Boys and Girls Club, and a girl’s softball coach in Anne Arundel County. In addition to his parents, Judge Mason was preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew Stokes, and his three siblings, Raymond, Doris, and Barbara. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joyce Mason; one son, Richard Johnson of Media, PA; two daughters, Jill Smith and Victoria Mason both of Anne Arundel County; and five grandchildren, Amanda Beckerink, Jacob Smith, Julia Stokes, Benjamin Smith and Benjamin Helms-Johnson.
Friends are invited to celebrate Judge Mason’s life with his family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 8 at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD where his funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 9. Burial will follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers a donation to a charity of your choice may be made.
