oger Carlquist, 92, died peacefully in his sleep on May 11, 2018. Roger was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and raised on a farm in nearby Draper. He attended the US Naval Academy and graduated in three years with the class of ‘48. He met his wife, Amante Semmes, while at Naval Aviation training in Pensacola, FL. Roger Carlquist loved to fly! He flew 55 different aircraft, was carrier qualified in 10 different aircraft, and made over 100 night landings in the F-4B. He was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, one during the Korean War and one while assigned to Patuxent River for test work on the F3H-2 Demon. He was also awarded the Air Medal and the Bronze Star. Roger retired from the Navy in 1973 and retired from the private sector in 1996, settling in Heritage Harbour in Annapolis. Roger was active in the community as a Rotarian, Past-President of the International Club of Annapolis along with various committees at Heritage Harbour. He was also an active supporter of USNA '48 class projects and events and a member of the Golden Eagles. Roger was a trustee emeritus of the USNA A&SP Foundation. He is survived by his wife, Amante Carlquist; his sister, Edith Reed (age 100); his six children, Susan (Roy) Bucher, Katherine Campbell, Mary (Bill) Barker, Richard (Tasna) Carlquist, Monica (Ric) Murray and Robert Carlquist and 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to celebrate Roger's life at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Tuesday, May 29 from 4 to 6 PM. A Memorial Mass will be offered at the Naval Academy Chapel on Wednesday, May 30 at 10:30 AM. Interment with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
