onald “Ron” L. Rice, 81, a 9-year resident of West River, MD and previously of Riverdale,MD, died September 16 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born November 30, 1931 in Lancaster, PA to the late Carl and Violet Rice, Ron graduated in 1949 from McCaskey High School in Lancaster.
He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1953 which included a tour of duty in Alaska. In his civilian career, Ron was a pressman for the U.S. Government Printing Office.
Ron was a member of the Elks and Knights of Columbus. He was also a coach for the CYO, American Legion and Bladensburg Boys and Girls Club. Ron enjoyed all sports, gardening and woodworking. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Ron is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anna Lena Rice; two sons, Ronald Thomas (Maureen) Rice of West River, MD and Michael William (Catherine) Rice of Pasadena, MD; one sister, Eileen Bauer of Lancaster, PA; six grandchildren, Brian (Haley) Rice of Edgewater,MD, Stephen (Ella) Rice and Bridget (Greg) Snyder of Stevensville,MD, Shawn and Shannon Rice of West River,MD and Patrick Rice of Pasadena, MD; and five great-grandchildren, Alexis, Daniel, Brayden and Layla Rice and Riley Snyder.
Friends are invited to Ron’s Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 20 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road, West River, MD. Interment in the church cemetery.
