Sandra B. Costigan - Obituary

S

andra B. Costigan, “Sandy”, 82, a resident of Severna Park and a lifelong resident of the Maryland/DC area, passed away on July 14, 2023, at her home. Sandy was born on August 6, 1940, in Washington, DC to the late Leonard and Iva Bazzle. She was a graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Washington, DC. After graduating from high school, Sandy spent a brief period at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), starting in the typing pool and then becoming an Administrative Secretary. She later settled into a long-term career at the Census Bureau in Suitland, MD. In retirement, she worked part-time at the United Way with her husband, Tom. Sandy spent her younger years drawing, playing the piano, and listening to music. She kept an extensive collection of original Elvis 45s that are in excellent condition to this day. In her early 20s, Sandy was named a finalist in the Miss Washington D.C. beauty pageant, whose winner would advance to the national Miss America competition. As she began raising a family with Tom, she turned her creative energies to sewing and crocheting, making clothes for her children that live on to this day in their elementary school class photos. She also enjoyed planning the family’s annual summer vacations to Ocean City, MD. Later in life, she spoke fondly of her time as one of the girls in the Friday morning ‘Breakfast Club’ at the Double T Diner in Annapolis, where she met each week to socialize and laugh with this small group of friends. She and Tom also traveled the world, exploring Germany, France, Ireland, England, Sweden, Italy, and Alaska. With the birth of her grandchildren, Caris and Evan, Sandy spent her days babysitting them with Tom. She spoke often of these happy days, and her joy in watching them grow into young adults. Although reserved by nature, Sandy loved a good laugh and good company. She will be remembered not only as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend but for her warm presence whose spirit lives on in those who knew her. Sandy is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thomas F. Costigan, her son, Scott and his wife Michele Costigan of Bethesda, MD, her daughter, Dawn Costigan of Baltimore, MD, her siblings, Donald and his wife Diane Bazzle of White Plains, MD and Perry Bazzle of Crofton, MD. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Caris Costigan and Evan Costigan. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Sandra's life on Thursday, July 20, 2023, from 3 to 5 pm and again from 6 pm to 8 pm, at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037 where her funeral service will be held on Friday, July 21, 2023, at 11 am.
