Sandra Jean Thomas - Obituary

andra “Sandy” Jean Thomas, 71, of Edgewater, Maryland died on Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Anne Arundel Medical Center after an 18-year battle with COPD. Born January 17, 1939 in Greensburg, PA to the late Raymond and Catherine Hoyle, she graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, MD. In 1956, she married her first husband, Robert A. Boyer, Sr. who currently resides in Laurel, MD. Sandy was employed as a clerk at National Geographic headquarters in Washington, DC, as a bookkeeper at Roberts Brothers Company in Takoma Park, MD and as a hostess at Adam's Ribs and Bayside Inn in Edgewater, MD. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 226 in Mayo, MD for 22 years, serving as 2nd Vice, also on the Executive Board and Catering Chairman for many, many years. Among her interests, Sandy loved spending time at the ocean, her flowers, gardening and wild birds. She was the beloved wife of Kenneth L. Thomas, whom she married on August 24, 1974; mother of Robert A. Boyer, Jr. of Odenton, MD and the late Vicki Lynn Boyer; sister of Keith W. Hoyle of Annapolis, Neil R. Hoyle of Surprize, AZ and the late Ronald W. Hoyle. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren: Dawn and Heather Corder and Katie Boyer. Friends are invited to Sandy's Life Celebration at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Monday, May 31, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The Auxiliary will conduct a service during the evening hours. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, June 1, at 12:30 p.m. Interment Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham.
