KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 6160 Oxon Hill Rd., Oxon Hill, MD 20745 on Thursday, April 21 from 10 am until time of services at 11am. Interment Private.
LIFE REFLECTIONS
Sarah Alice Jones, daughter of the late Willie Mae (King) Sewell and the late Jack Jones was born February 25, 1938 in West Point, MS.
Sarah attended the public school system in West Point, Mississippi during her youth. She completed her education at North Side High School and received many accolades for leadership and dance choreography. She participated in the music program and was the drum majorette in the Marching Band.
In 1955, she met her husband Vanderbilt Mathews and conceived one child, Shirley Mathews Veney.
Sarah was a warm, compassionate and meek person. She was loved by everyone that knew her. Many new her for her acts of kindness. Everyone has known her to open her home to anyone in need of a warm meal and a place to lay their head. She managed the Star Pizza on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC where she was known for her famous pizza and she managed a Deli in Arlington, VA where she was known as “the Deli Queen” and famous for her sub sandwiches.
On February 26 (the day after her 73rd birthday) Sarah took ill and was rushed to the hospital. On Wednesday, April 14, Sarah Alice Jones fell asleep in death. She will be dearly missed by all who lover her.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Veney; her brother, Homer Nelson Sewell (Clara); her grandchildren, Chervonne Evette Washington (Judge); Christopher Tyrone Desper (Yvette); Justin Alphonso Desper; her great grandchildren, Bianca Mathews; and Nichelle Washington and her great great grandchild, Zi’yah Robinson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
