arah J. Mason was born on August 13, 1922 in Brandy, Virginia to John & Ruth
McGuinn. At an early age Sarah moved to Washington., DC with her family in an
effort to obtain better opportunities. In Washington, Sarah matriculated through
the DC public school system graduating from Cardoza High School in 1940. Sarah
furthered her education by attending the Cortez Peters Business School majoring
in English, bookkeeping, and typing as well as the Department of Agriculture
Graduate School .
Sarah met her loving husband, William Mason while in High School. They were
married 63 years until Mason’s death in 2005.
As a graduate of Cardoza High School, class of 1940, Sarah served as Secretary of
the Alumni Association for many years.
In 1941, Sarah began working for the Federal Government on a War Service
Appointment. Receiving multiple promotions and awards, Sarah retired in 1978
after 41 years of dedicated service. Her last position prior to retirement was as
secretary to the Executive Assistant to the Secretary for Housing and Urban
Development.
Sarah had no children but served as surrogate parent to a multitude of nieces,
nephews, great nieces and great nephews, who loved her and she lovingly
spoiled.
Sarah’s, parents, John & Ruth McGuinn, sisters, Earle Roberson, Edna McGuinn,
Indiabell Brown, Leska Freeman, Janet Rich and brother, John Warner McGuinn
preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister, Helen M. Wilkerson, nieces,
Ruth Brown, Marilyn Fobbs (joseph Sr.), Joan Young, nephews Walter Roberson,
George Brown, Jr., and a host of relatives and friends.
