ebastian Michael “Mike” Costa, 93, a 20-year resident of Annapolis, passed away peacefully at home with family by his side on June 25, 2016. Born on May 28, 1923, in Long Branch, NJ to the late Saverio and Gregoria Costa, Mike graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1942. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 where he served as a Sergeant and received the American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. After leaving the military, Mike returned to school, earning an associate’s degree from Monmouth University in 1948 and a Bachelor of Science degree from Ft. Monmouth Education School in 1954. He made his career as a technical engineer with NASA where he worked on the Vanguard satellite and Hubble telescope. After his retirement, Mike became a real estate broker for Long and Foster.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Ingrid Costa, two children, Michele Shapiro of West Long Branch, NJ and Walter (Kellie) Hawkins of Monrovia, MD; six grandchildren, Michael (Layla) Shapiro of West Long Branch, NJ, Michael and Jessica Hawkins of Urbana, MD, Joseph Gibbons of Monrovia, MD, June (Rupert) Curry of Brunswick, MD and Kierstyn Cox of Huber Heights, OH; and six great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Friday, July 1 from 9 a.m. until Mike’s funeral service begins at 11 a.m. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. A private interment will be held at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville.
