hirley Clatterbuck Avery, a 25-year resident of Riva and previously of New Carrollton, died on November 22, 2014 of liver cancer after a 6 month illness. She was 78.
Born September 9, 1936 in Washington, DC to the late Lewis and Rebecca Clatterbuck, she graduated from Washington and Lee High School in Arlington, VA and attended Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN. Shirley worked for the Baltimore County Delegation of General Assembly of Maryland in Annapolis before her retirement. A lifelong volunteer, she was most recently a member of the South County Senior Center Advisory Council, the Aging Advisory Council and a member of the Relay for Life team, "New Kids on the Block." Shirley loved to cook and dance. She enjoyed performing with the South County Senior Center Showstoppers.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Alan J. Avery on September 18, 2009.
She is survived by her two children, Sharon L. Darden of Riva and Steven A. Avery of Glen Burnie; two brothers, Robert L. Clatterbuck of Lively, VA and Mark Clatterbuck of Rockville, VA; and two grandsons, Mitchell and Matthew Darden, both of Arnold.
Friends are invited to Shirley's Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Monday, December 8 from 1 to 3pm and 5pm until time of memorial service begins at 6pm.
