hirley Lauraine Jones, 82, died December 1, 2010 at her residence after a very long illness. She was born on June 6, 1928. Mrs. Jones was born at Annapolis Emergency Services, and raised in Annapolis, Maryland to the late Della and Wilford McCarthy. She was employed by the Department of the Navy for 40 years, first as an Administrative Officer for the Public Works Department at David W. Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center and was responsible for the award of construction, Architect Engineering and Facilities Support contracts. She was also responsible for the administration of all Utilities and telephone functions as well as all Military Housing. After spending 30 years at David Taylor she moved to Washington to the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Chesapeake Division. Mrs. Jones retired from the Dept. of the Navy in 1990 receiving a Meritious Civilian Service Award recognizing her as an outstanding civilian employee. This was the final award of many she had received throughout her exemplary career. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Ranger Rosary group and assisted with Sunday Euchaustic Service at Sunrise Assisted Living in Annapolis, Maryland. She enjoyed traveling and was an avid animal lover, and spent as much time as she could loving and caring for those she adopted. Her greatest pleasure was to spend time with her dogs and cat. She also had a great love for children and spent as much time as possible with the children of her adopted families. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh E. Jones. She is survived by her daughter, and life time best friend, Patricia A. Holleran of Annapolis, Maryland, and her Aunt, Edith VanSaun of Sykesville, Maryland. Friends are invited to Shirley’s Life Celebration from 6 to 9 p.m., Sunday December 5, 2010 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomon Island Road, Edgewater, Maryland 21037. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9 a.m. on Monday, December 6, 2010 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N Bestgate Road, Annapolis, Maryland 21401. Interment Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery. As Shirley loved flowers they are welcome, but memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401 or the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, P.O. Box 3471, Annapolis, MD 21403.
