S

hirley Marie McFern Lane, 93, of Port St. Lucie, Florida died November 16, 2013 of natural causes. She was born to the late Harold and Betty McFern on June 19, 1920, in Detroit, Michigan. Shirley attended Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia after high school, learning the skills she would use as a stenographer and secretary. She married Dr. Edwin Charles Lane on July 4, 1942 living in Waldorf, Maryland, Hebron, Ohio and residing in Oxon Hill, Maryland until she retired as a school secretary and office manager in 1984. In Maryland she was an active supporter of the Democratic party and served as a founding member of her local school employees union. She subsequently lived in Fort Pierce, Florida. Her personal interests and skills also led to service to others. She learned cooking from her French mother and learned to adapt her recipes to large groups, including church dinners and planning and implementing the commissary as a leader for Boy Scout summer camps. She learned flower arranging as a member of the Ohio garden club. As a member of the St. Barnabas Altar Guild she arranged the weekly and holiday altar flowers. She is survived and greatly missed by her beloved children, John Lane and his wife Carol of Fishkill, New York; the late William Lane and his wife Christie of West Long Branch, New Jersey; Thomas Lane and his wife Laura of White Plains, Maryland; Susan Lane and her husband Torrey Harmon of Rancho Santa Fe, California. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. A viewing will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 24 at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 6160 Oxon Hill Rd., Oxon Hill, MD. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 27 at 11 a.m. at St. Barnabas Church, 5203 St. Barnabas Rd., Temple Hills, MD with interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to The Mustard Seed Ministries, 3130 S US-1, Fort Pierce, Florida.
