S

hirley Ann Vito “Nana”, 75, a 40-year resident of Edgewater, died on January 28 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was born on August 13, 1936 in Quicksburg, VA. In 1953, she went to work for the White Tower in Washington, DC. She continued working until her marriage in 1955 after which she devoted herself to pursuing her life’s passion as wife, mom and nana. Shirley’s family meant everything to her and she was happiest when everyone was around. Her grandkids were the light of her life and she loved her dog, Skippy, and cat, Brandi, who were treasured members of her family. She also enjoyed feeding birds, ducks, and squirrels who visited her yard. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Laura Hottle; two brothers, William T. and Thomas Eugene Hottle; three sisters, Betty Virginia Bertschinger, Margaret Ellen Hottle and Nancy Marie Orebaugh; and a grandson, Michael Keith Vito. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Joseph P. Vito; her children, Michael Wayne Vito of Lothian and Cathy Ann (James) Strain of Prince Frederick as well as Gary Thomas Hottle of Hyattsville and Joan Ellen (Thomas) Wink of Owings whom she raised as her own; a sister, Mae Lilly Campbell of Winchester, VA; three grandchildren, James Strain, III, Joseph Ronald Strain, and Tara Lynn Strain all of Prince Frederick. A Memorial Mass will be offered on Wednesday, February 1 at 1pm at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Calvert County, P.O. Box 3505, Prince Frederick, MD 20678. Interment private.
