Stanley McCann - Obituary

S

tanley E. McCann, 93, of Annapolis, Maryland passed away on July 11, 2008 after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Earl William and Bessie E. McCann, his sister Ruth Battles, and wife of 55 years, Dorothy Jane Gleason McCann. He is survived by his daughter, Judith McCann of Locust Grove, Virginia, son and daughter-in-law, William and Susan McCann of Binghamton, New York, his loving companion of 12 years, Charlotte Gilchrist of Annapolis, four grandsons and their wives, Bryan and Sana Gill, Jeff and Lisa Gill, David and Lisabeth Sewell McCann, Timothy and Sharon McCann and nine great-grandchildren. Stan (Mac) was from Oswego, New York and graduated from Oswego State with an Industrial Arts degree. After teaching in New York for a few years he enlisted in the Navy during WWII and served upon tankers as a radar technician. Upon conclusion of the war, he went to work for General Electric in Syracuse, New York where he started as a technical support person for the armed services and then progressed through a variety of positions of increasing responsibilities in training, recruiting and human resources. These changes took him to Mississippi and then to Maryland. After retiring from GE after 33 years, he started substitute teaching and volunteering for the Red Cross and Meals-On-Wheels. He loved to build and work with his hands on projects and missed the hands-on aspect of work so he went back to work as a service technician with the Suburban Service in Crofton where he became the in-house expert on electronic air filters and cleaners. He also became very active in Kiwanis and the Toastmasters in Crofton. Over the last few years he has been very active with golf, bridge, square dancing and traveling throughout the world. He had a very active and full life and will be missed by all those who had the opportunity to know him. There will be a memorial service for him on Thursday, July 17 at 11:30 am at Calvary United Methodist Church 301 Rowe Blvd. Annapolis, MD 21401. He will be interred at the family plot in Oswego at a later date. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to The Heritage Harbour Health Group 801 Compass Way Annapolis, MD 21401 OR The Memorial Fund at Calvary United Methodist Church 301 Rowe Blvd. Annapolis, MD 21401.
