S

tephen Krause, 82, a resident of Annapolis for the past 35 years died of complications of prostate cancer on March 2nd, 2009 at Mandarin House, Hospice of the Chesapeake. He was born in Berlin, Wisconsin on September 20, 1926 and grew up in Iron Mountain, Michigan. Upon graduation from Iron Mountain High School in 1944 he entered the Navy in a college program at Notre Dame. After one year at Notre Dame he matriculated at the U. S. Naval Academy, graduating with the class of 1949. After graduation he served for two years aboard the jeep aircraft carrier, USS Sicily, participating in the Korean War. Upon leaving the Sicily he went to flight training and served for the next 18 years as a Navy pilot. His most memorable flying experiences were his eighteen months flying the seaward extension of the DEW line out of Argentia, Newfoundland and his two plus years as a Hurricane Hunter, flying into numerous Atlantic hurricanes. While on staff duty in the Navy he earned a Masters degree in Personnel Management from the George Washington University. He was subsequently assigned as the Assistant and then Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Personnel Research Activity in Washington, D.C. After retirement from the Navy he worked for twenty plus years as a consultant with Northrop, EG&G and Booz Allen. LCDR Krause was pre-deceased by his wife of 47 years, Rita Freeman of Bangor, Maine. They met and were married at NAS Brunswick, Maine, where he was in his first squadron and she was a Navy Nurse. LCDR Krause is survived by his second wife, Mary Lou Pringle, a Navy widow whom he married in 2004. They have enjoyed traveling, to Europe, China, South America and the Maritime Provinces of Canada. They very much enjoyed sailing on the Chesapeake and memorialized their joy in being together by naming their boat Bonus. He is also survived by his two children, Stephen R. (Skip) Krause Jr. of Daphne, Alabama and Eleanor Krause of Alexandria, Virginia, and Skip's wife, Tracy, and two teen-age children, Grace Krause and Stephen (Trey) Krause III. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at 10 am, at the St. Andrew's Chapel at the U.S. Naval Academy (Please enter through Gate 8).
