Stephen E. Schult - Obituary

O

n Friday, June 2, 2023, Steve Schult of Galesville, Maryland, cherished husband of Susan Schult; proud and loving father of Patti Helferstay (Chip) and Nicki Ault (Colin); adoring grandfather of Kinsey Helferstay; beloved brother of Susan Hull (Doug) and Thomas Schult (Rebecca); treasured uncle to ten nieces and nephews and four great nieces and nephews, passed away. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joan and Cortlandt Schult. Steve grew up on Long Island, NY; Merritt Island, Florida; and landed, happily, in Bowie, MD, where he raised his family. He loved Bowie, and much of Bowie loved him. He was a 1974 graduate of Bowie High School, and a long-time (and somewhat infamous) lifeguard at Whitehall Pool. He enjoyed vacations at his parents’ home on Lake George, and, as he did everywhere, made life-long friends there. Steve married Susan (formerly Shulack), a Jersey girl, in 1989. Susan was the love of his life, and they enjoyed the beach, boating, Buffett, and, more recently, traveling. In 1990, they moved to Amethyst Lane in Bowie, and their tight-knit group of neighbors there became another family. Steve had a successful career, working at Melvin Motors in Bowie and then, for 30 years, for Coca-Cola Enterprises. He retired last year. But his focus was always on his family. His daughters – and, later, their husbands and his granddaughter -- were the very center of his life. He coached softball for 7 years, well beyond the time his own girls were on the team. Steve was proud of Patti and Nicki’s accomplishments in swimming (although he certainly did hate swim meets!). Steve was at his happiest on the water. He was a competitive sailor, a dedicated fisherman, and an avid boater. In 2021, he and Susan left Bowie to live on the West River in Galesville. Friends are invited to celebrate Steve’s life on Friday, June 9 from 9 am until a funeral service begins at 11 am at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 6 Herndon Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21403, (410)268-8816. Condolences may be made online using the Memories tab on this page.
