usan Rose Dodwell of Edgewater passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024, at 81. She was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on Thanksgiving, November 24, 1943, to Martin and Eunice Mika (Roberts). Susan attended Framingham State University, graduating with a degree in education, and received her master’s degree in library sciences from Towson State University. She married James L. Dodwell, Jr. in 1967 and embarked on an extraordinary life filled with adventure, laughter, and love. As an elementary school librarian and media specialist in the Anne Arundel Public School System, she touched the lives of countless children and taught them the love of books and learning. She will be remembered for her vibrant personality in the classroom, her jazzy shoes, and her passion for reading. Stepping away from teaching temporarily while raising her son, Susan also developed her love for cooking into a thriving catering career. An avid sailor, Susan enjoyed sailing on the Chesapeake with her husband as a member of the West River Sailing Club. Not afraid of expanding her skills, Susan and Jim became accomplished blue water sailors, completing a 16-month voyage from Maine to Venezuela and back again with their son, as well as numerous trips to Bermuda. Susan is survived by her husband, James L. Dodwell, Jr., her son, James (Alexandra) L. Dodwell III, and granddaughters, Larkin Victoria and Paige Llewellyn Dodwell. Susan was predeceased by her sister, Nancy Lord. Memorial services will be held at a later date with immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Long Island Community Library in Long Island, Maine – a cause and place that she greatly cherished. Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Long Island Community Library, 7 Gorham Ave, Long Island, ME 04050. Susan, or “Zsa Zsa” to those who loved her most, will be greatly missed and will always live in our memory as a cherished wife, mother, friend, and teacher to all. Please take a moment and leave a condolence for her family by using the memories tab on this page.
