Terry Watson - Obituary

T

erry Kent Watson, age 72, a 1-year resident of Annapolis, MD and previously of Harwood, MD for 15 years and Mitchellville, MD for 25 years, died on June 17th, 2012 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of a rare, incurable brain disorder called progressive supranuclear palsy. He had the disease for seven years. Born on May 30, 1940 in Asheville, NC, Terry graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School class of 1958. In 2008, he attended his 50th class reunion and honored his classmates with a visit as their Maroon Devil mascot. After graduating, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Hawaii where he served as a communications specialist until 1965. Following his military service, he worked in the communications field in Ohio and then in Maryland where he worked for John Staurulakis, Inc. He became the associate director and retired after 27 years of service. His business travels took him to almost every state in the country. He enjoyed traveling and made many friends through his business associations. Terry served on several committees while a member of the Country Club at Woodmore. He was active in fundraising for the Hospice of the Chesapeake, the Providence Center, Prince George’s Hospital and the Prince George’s Symphony. He loved to travel and made numerous trips in the United States as well as to Canada, Ireland, Scotland and England, mostly seeking out challenging golf courses. He was a member of the Collectors Golf Club and prided himself in collecting golf clubs, golf balls, bags and more. Golf was his passion, comparable only to his love of Corvettes. He was the proud owner of the 44th 1953 Corvette to come off the assembly line in Flint Michigan. He had the car restored to perfection and was awarded the Top Flight Award and the Bloomington Gold Award, one of the highest awards. Terry was an avid Tar Heels fan and sported the University of North Carolina emblem daily. During basketball season, he was in his glory while watching his team climb to the top. Terry also enjoyed NASCAR and was a collector of his hero, Dale Earnhardt. He was a member of the Department 56 Annapolis Villagers Club. He collected most of the “Snow Village” pieces. During the Christmas holidays, he designed and assembled a village setting that was admired and enjoyed by all. One of the most cherished vacations for Terry was the Annual Family Holiday trip to the Outer Banks, where the entire family gathered. Terry is survived by his wife, Ileen, with whom he would have celebrated his 20th anniversary on June 27th; two sons, Robert Watson of Montana and Matthew Watson and his wife, Kristie Keith of Santa Rosa, CA; one sister, Sandra Payne and her husband Carman of Asheville, four grandchildren, Cyrus and Ella of Santa Rosa, CA, Austin of Mt. Gilead, OH and Rachael of Asheville, NC.
