homas Benjamin Greenwell, Sr., “Duke†“Tommy†age 80, of Denton, MD and formerly of Edgewater and Capitol Heights, MD, died on Monday, June 15, 2009 at his daughter's home in Edgewater after a 4-month battle with cancer. Duke was born on September 14, 1928 in Seat Pleasant, MD. He was an Animal Warden III with the Prince George's County Animal Control. He raced pigeons for over 70 years and was a member of the American Pigeon Racing Union, No Boundaries Racing Pigeon Club, and Hillside and Concourse Pigeon Clubs. He also loved hunting, baseball, dogs and all birds. Every year he would plant a large vegetable garden. He was the beloved husband of Judy A. Greenwell for 54 years until her death on January 11, 2007; the father of Thomas “Bubby†Greenwell, Jr. of Denton, MD, Jimmy “Pete†Greenwell, Duane B. Greenwell and Stephen M. Greenwell all of Shady Side, MD, Theresa M. Morcombe of Preston, MD, Sue A. Conner of Edgewater, MD, and the late Mark A. Greenwell; brother of Mary A. Hyson of Lusby, MD, Gwendolyn A. Arnold of Prince Frederick, MD, and the late Timothy M. Greenwell and Margaret C. Gray. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. Friends are invited to Duke's Life Celebration at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, June 19 at 10:30am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Edgewater, MD. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
