T

homas “Tom” Walter Hennessey, a 35-year resident of Edgewater, died on Tuesday, January 17, 2012. Born September 29, 1920 in Saugus, MA, Tom was a Navy Seabee who landed on Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He retired from the U.S. Government Naval Sea Systems Command in an executive position; receiving a superior accomplishment service award upon retirement in 1978. Tom was an accomplished gunsmith and pistol shot. He once “sighted-in” rifles for Red Sox great Ted Williams to use on an African safari. He was also an avid reader; visiting the West Street branch of the Anne Arundel County Library several times a week. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria A. Hennessey, whom he married on January 20, 1943 and who died on January 10, 2010 and by a sister, Berniece, and brother, James. He is survived by two daughters, Linda (Wolfgang) G. Schulz of Saint James City, FL and Joyce (Patrick) Hennessey-Mastin of Harvest, AL; two grandchildren, James P. Hennessy of Gambrills and Elizabeth Russell of Edgewater; and six great-grandchildren, Dylan Russell, Thomas and Melissa Hennessy, Maya Teal and Carter Hill. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 10am at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Tom’s name to the Anne Arundel County Public Library Foundation, Inc., c/o Annapolis Area Branch, 5 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
