Thomas Hennessey - Obituary

homas “Tom” Walter Hennessey, a 35-year resident of Edgewater, died on Tuesday, January 17, 2012. Born September 29, 1920 in Saugus, MA, Tom was a Navy Seabee who landed on Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He retired from the U.S. Government Naval Sea Systems Command in an executive position; receiving a superior accomplishment service award upon retirement in 1978. Tom was an accomplished gunsmith and pistol shot. He once “sighted-in” rifles for Red Sox great Ted Williams to use on an African safari. He was also an avid reader; visiting the West Street branch of the Anne Arundel County Library several times a week. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria A. Hennessey, whom he married on January 20, 1943 and who died on January 10, 2010 and by a sister, Berniece, and brother, James. He is survived by two daughters, Linda (Wolfgang) G. Schulz of Saint James City, FL and Joyce (Patrick) Hennessey-Mastin of Harvest, AL; two grandchildren, James P. Hennessy of Gambrills and Elizabeth Russell of Edgewater; and six great-grandchildren, Dylan Russell, Thomas and Melissa Hennessy, Maya Teal and Carter Hill. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 10am at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville.
