homas Edward Powers Sr., beloved father, veteran, musician, and mathematician, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 14, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on November 16, 1932, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to James Jonathon Powers and Elizabeth Margaret Gunther Powers, Thomas lived a life defined by service, intellectual achievement, and devotion to family. Thomas was predeceased by his parents; siblings Melbourne Powers, John Powers, Delores Reynolds, Lavinia Powers, and Sister Rosemary Powers; son, Thomas Edward Powers Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Xander Lee and Mary Kate Wiegand. A proud graduate of Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids in 1950, Thomas served honorably in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1959 during the Korean War, where he also showcased his athletic prowess as a member of the Yokosuka Seahawks football team while stationed in Japan. He later earned a B.S. in Mathematics, laying the foundation for a distinguished career in civil service. Thomas began his career at the Bureau of the Census where he worked on innovative projects, including early efforts to analyze weather data using mainframe computers. His expertise in programming led him to NASA, where he played a role in the Apollo program by developing mathematical models critical to the mission’s success. In 1969, Thomas proudly gathered his family to watch the historic lunar landing, sharing his deep sense of accomplishment in contributing to this monumental achievement. Later, at the Department of Justice, he worked in the Organized Crime Unit, managing sensitive data for the Witness Relocation Program. In an era of punch-card computing, he personally transported critical data sets between his office and the data center, ensuring the security and integrity of vital information. He retired from civil service in 1986, leaving a legacy of innovation and dedication. An accomplished musician, Thomas brought joy to those around him with his skillful trumpet and guitar performances, often delighting neighbors with impromptu concerts that echoed through the community. His love for music was a gift he shared generously. Thomas is survived by his brother, Gerald Powers; former spouse, Loretta Powers; and children, James Powers, Robert Powers, Deborah (Rocky) Hutchins, Michael Powers, Christine (Erik) Wiegand, Richard (Amy) Powers, Daniel (Valerie) Powers, Patricia (David) Vanschaik, Stephen (Robynn) Powers, and Elizabeth (Aaron) Smith. He leaves behind a legacy of love with 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A faithful member of Saint Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Indian Head, Maryland, Thomas’ life will be celebrated with a viewing at 10:00 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. Interment Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Hwy, Cheltenham, MD 20623 on Friday, August 22, 2025 at 10:30 AM. Please arrive 15 minutes early.
