Thomas M. Smith - Obituary

homas “Tom” McNary Smith, 79, of Lothian, MD passed away on Saturday, February 8th, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was a beloved father, grandfather, husband, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Tom was born August 9th, 1945, in Rochester, PA, the son of the late Gerald Smith, Margaret Breaden Smith, and Bertha Smith. Tom graduated from high school and went on to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1963, where he fought in the Vietnam War. Tom served until honorably discharged in 1969. He married Kathryne Bauer on August 9th, 1969. They were married for 34 years and had 4 children and 7 grandchildren. He worked as a D.C. police officer from 1970 to 1990, where he earned the rank of Sergeant. He received a Medal of Valor for being wounded in the line of duty in 1987. After retiring from the police force, he worked in security for various government buildings in D.C.Tom especially loved reading books, watching movies, walking outdoors, and helping animals. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald, Margaret & Bertha Smith; and brother, James Smith. Remaining to cherish Tom’s memory are Kathryne Smith; children, Christine Kinsky (Joseph Kinsky), Jeffrey Smith, Susan Smith (James Dotson), and Andrew Smith (Cathleen Smith); and grandchildren, Katelyn Smith, Samantha Kinsky, Grace Kinsky, Elizabeth Smith, James Dotson, Olivia Smith, and Adalynn Smith. A memorial service with Military Honors will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery at a later determined date.
