T

homas J. “Tom” Smith, Sr., 91, a 10-year resident of Annapolis and formerly of Riverdale, died December 25. He was born on January 28, 1921 in Washington, DC to the late Francis M. and Margaret E. Smith and worked as a salesman for Bergmann's Laundry, retiring in 1986. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, gardening, fishing, the Redskins and a good cup of coffee. Tom was preceded in death by his son, Thomas J. Smith, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Marie L. Smith; three sons, Robert (Madelyn) Smith of Davidsonville, Michael (Suzanne) Smith of Stafford, VA and John (Nancy) Smith of Centreville, VA; five daughters, Patricia (Ross Camardella) Newgent of Centreville, Marie (Dan) Mattingly of La Plata, Jean (Patrick) Mahat of Vienna, VA, Catherine (Rob) Scanlan of Winchester, VA and Theresa (Jim) Harrell of Rockville; 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Friends are invited to Tom’s Life Celebration from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, December 28 at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 29 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Thomas J. Smith, Jr. Scholarship Fund, Mt. St. Mary’s University, 16300 Old Emmitsburg Road, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.
