Thomas Earl Smith - Obituary

homas Earl "Smitty" Smith, 91, a former resident of Bowie, MD for thirty years, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 28 at his home in Middleburg, VA. Born on February 23, 1927 in Washington, DC, Smitty graduated from Gonzaga High School and served in the US Army during World War II. He worked with the Washington Wholesale Drug company and later at the Capital Centre and Verizon Center. He was also a Redskin usher for 50 years. Smitty enjoyed work, sports and his family. He was the devoted father of Debbie (Tommy) Santmyer of Middleburg, VA and Brenda Sanford (Jack Kontgias) Sanford of Annapolis, MD; grandfather of Sarah (Mike) Fronckel, Bradley Santmyer and Darren (Rachel) Sanford; great-grandfather of Andrew, Brennan and Davis; brother of Catherine Day of Monrovia, CA, Margaret Darlington of Gaithersburg, MD, Robert Smith of Palm Springs, CA and Janet Robertson of Capitol Heights, MD, also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Smitty's life on Thursday, July 5 from 10:30 AM until his funeral service begins at 12:30 PM at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. Interment will follow at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
