T

hornton F. Green, 91, of Annapolis, died June 29, 2012, surrounded by family. Thornton was born December 30, 1920 near Wellsboro, Pennsylvania to the late George H. Green and Aldora Decker Green. His brother, Larry Q. Green of Wilmington, DE died in 2001. Thornton graduated in 1939 from Mc Kinley (Tech) High School and attended the University of Maryland College Park in an accelerated program because of the pending World War II, and received an accounting/economics degree in 1943. He immediately entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater of Operations primarily with the Headquarters of the VIII Corps, and participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He was employed by the Audit Review Operations of the National Office of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (forerunner of the IRS). He later transferred to the Corporate Tax Ruling Division and retired in 1981 after 35 years service--receiving the Albert Gallatin Award from the Secretary of the Treasury. In February, 1979 Thornton received an award for his service to Boy Scout Troop 732 of Adelphi, Maryland. He was also involved in many zoning proposals and community projects in Adelphi where the family lived for 25 years. In his retirement years, he assisted the Caring Network of the Heritage Harbour Senior Community by driving patients to appointments. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Barbara Catterton Green (nee Grimmel) and five children, Michael Green of Annapolis, George Green of Vienna, V A., Aldora Dabbs of Salisbury, NC, Carolyn Bean of Columbia, MD and Lawrence Green of Cary, NC. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Thomas Dabbs, Marie Dabbs Capito, Christopher Bean, Jennifer Green Lunday, Kevin Bean, Katherine Green, Meghan Green, Valerie Green, Melissa Green and Adelaide Green. Services and interment private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Thornton's name to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
