alerie Restifo, 80, a longtime resident of Annapolis, MD, passed away on November 5, 2023, at Charter Senior Living of Annapolis. Born on January 26, 1943, in Cleveland, OH to the late Dr. Samuel J. and Valerie R. Restifo, Valerie grew up in Shaker Heights, OH. After graduating from Shaker Heights High School, she received a nursing degree from the Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, MO; a Bachelor of Science degree from Lindenwood College in St. Charles, MO; a Master of Arts degree from Washington College in Chestertown, MD and a Master of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD where she was recognized with the university’s highest honors. She was licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland. Valerie taught for 46 years as a Nurse Educator at the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing; on the S.S. Hope in Tunis, Tunisia, and in Natal and Maceio, Brazil; and at the Maqueen Gibbs Willis School of Nursing in Easton, MD. She also used her teaching skills in staff development at Doctors Hospital in Lanham, MD; community education at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD; continuing education and professional development at the American Nurses Association in Silver Spring, MD as well as with the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and American Lung Association. Valerie was a member of the American Nurses Association and a member and Continuing Education Provider Unit Chair of the Maryland Nurses Association. In 1990, Valerie was recognized in the Mosby-Year Book with its Presidential Award. Valerie was proficient in the French, Italian, and Portuguese languages. In her spare time, she enjoyed traveling, walking, the beauty of nature, and relaxing in the evening with a gin and tonic. Three words sum up her life: precious, smart, and lovely. Valerie is survived by her loving husband of 21 years, Spurgeon C. Grove, Jr. of Annapolis; two sisters, Dr. Mary D. Restifo of Washington, DC, and Roberta A. and her husband, Ernest A. Carpico of Holly Springs, NC; one brother, Robert A. and his wife, Jan A. Restifo of Columbus OH; five nephews, Robert W. Restifo of Columbus, OH, Travis S. Carpico of Boston, MA, and Brad A., Nicholas A. and Christian D. Carpico of Chapel Hill, NC; four nieces, Kim B. Carpico of Boston, MA, Julia D. Carpico of Chapel Hill, NC, and Maralyn E. and Mattea R. Restifo of Columbus, OH. Valerie is also survived by two stepdaughters, Buffy J. Macomber of Sarasota, FL, and Lisa B. and her husband, Anthony L. Nappier of Easton, MD; and four grandchildren, Bryce Macomber of Sarasota, FL, and Mia M., Dominic A., Marissa J. and Carmen M. Nappier of Easton, MD. In the words of Thomas Campbell, “To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.” Valerie will indeed live on in our hearts forever.
