erla J. Raulin, 88, a 49-year resident of Edgewater, died from complications from a stroke on October 5 at the Mandrin Inpatient Care Center in Harwood. Born, April 14, 1925 in Somerset, KY to the late Lee and Bessie Mae Phelps, Verla was valedictorian of the 1944 graduating class of the McKinney High School in McKinney, KY. She completed high school with a 12-year perfect attendance record. Verla had a dual career as homemaker and Fingerprint Correspondence Instructor at the FBI. After 29 years of service, she retired from the FBI in 1985 but never retired from being a homemaker. She attended St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Annapolis and was a member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading on her sun porch, all sorts of crafts, especially crocheting, and eating chocolate. Verla drove until she was 87 and enjoyed her daily luncheons with her friends at McDonald’s. Verla was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Frederick D. Raulin, who died in 2002; brothers, James L. Phelps, Sr. and Cecil Phelps, and grandson, Joseph Raulin. She is survived by two sons, Donald Cecil Raulin and his wife Patricia, of Edgewater and Dennis Lee Raulin and his wife Aileen of Chesapeake Beach; daughter, Susan Jane Franklin and her husband Bob of Edgewater; seven grandchildren, Lauren Franklin, John and Joshua Raulin, Stacy Martin and Christopher Hall, and Lee and Will Raulin; and six great-grandchildren, Ryan, Sydney, John Jr., Leanna, Christian and London. Friends are invited to Verla’s life celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, and from 9:30 until her funeral service begins at 10am on Thursday, October 10, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Interment will be at Lakemont Memorial Gardens.
