ida S. David, a long-time resident of Sunrise of Severna Park Assisted Living, and formerly of Hyattsville, MD and Hillsboro, TX, died on Friday January 14, 2011. Vida was born in the small town of West, TX on November 11, 1914 to the late Jesse A. and Stella M. Stokes. She was raised in Hillsboro, TX and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1932. She began working for McCrory’s in Hillsboro, where she became a soda fountain manager. She was transferred to McCrory’s in Galveston, TX and Baton Rouge, LA, eventually settling in Washington, DC. In 1945, she married John “Rex” Recknor, who died in 1960. They had one daughter. In 1970, she married William Gordon David. They were married for 27 years until his death in 1997. Vida worked for a time as a checker at Food Fair before being employed at the Civil Aeronautics Board, where she began as a clerk typist and worked her way up to the position of Chief of Records and Route Information Division. Vida was a charter member of University Baptist Church in College Park, MD where she was a deacon. She belonged to the Friends of the Master Sunday School class and taught children’s Sunday School classes. Vida was also a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and became President of the District of Columbia WMU. She was an accomplished seamstress and made most of her own and her daughter’s clothes. Vida loved gardening, Bible study, crafts and travel. She made many visits back home to Texas and explored the United States and Western Europe with her church group. She also visited Alaska and Greece with her daughter. Vida is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Lee Recknor of Arnold, one brother, Clayton Stokes of Burleson, TX and 11 nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to Vida’s Life Celebration on Sunday, January 16, from 6 to 8p.m. at the GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD where funeral services will be held on Monday, January 17, at 3p.m. Interment Tuesday, January 18, at 12:30pm at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, MD.
