irginia Edna Gibbs, 94, an Annapolis resident for more than 50 years and previously of Ventura, Calif., died of natural causes Aug. 25 at Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born April 3, 1913, in Churchton, Mrs. Gibbs was a 1931 graduate of Annapolis High School. A professional knitter who made dresses, sweaters, bedspreads and afghans, she was the owner of the Ventura Custom Knit Store from 1950 to 1988.
Mrs. Gibbs was an American Red Cross volunteer before, during and after World War II, for a period of 50 years. She was president of the Parent Teacher Association, American Legion and Women of America in Ventura and Simi Valley, Calif.
Her interests included sports, American and world history, poker, her family and the welfare of young people in the U.S. Armed Forces.
On Nov. 26, 1932, she married Navy Cmdr. Victor Earl Gibbs, who died Jan. 1, 1969. She was the mother of the late John Victor Gibbs and the last surviving sibling of six brothers and eight sisters.
Surviving are one son, Harry E. Cook of Redwood City, Calif.; one daughter, Cheri Simmons of Annapolis; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services and burial are private. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of one's choice.
