irginia Colton Knode, 93, of Solomons, formerly of Washington, D.C., died of natural causes Aug. 6, 2010, at Asbury-Solomons Island Continuing Care Retirement Community, Solomons. Born Nov. 28, 1916, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Alton Archie Moore and the late Ada Jasper Moore. She graduated in 1934 from Eastern High School and attended Wilson Teachers College, both in Washington, D.C. She was an administrative assistant for many years for the Federal Government at the former Health, Education and Welfare Department. Upon retirement from HEW, she worked for the Federal Credit Union until she was 80. A member of the Eastern Star organization, she was also very active in church activities and Sunday school groups at Fountain Memorial Baptist Church in Anacostia, Washington, D.C., and Broadview Baptist Church in Temple Hills. She and her husband, Daniel Preston Knode, Jr., whom she married July 3, 1935, moved to Temple Hills in 1969 and later relocated to La Plata. They spent their summers for more than 20 years at their home away from home in Myrtle Beach, SC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Daniel Preston Knode, Jr., who died Oct. 5, 2001; brothers, Jasper Moore and Archie Moore; and sisters, Katherine McCurdy and Frances Percifield. She is survived by her sons and their wives, Daniel and Barbara Knode of Fort Washington, Stephen and Candy Knode of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Ronald and Judy Knode of Crofton, and Wayne and Diane Knode of La Plata; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to Virginia’s Life Celebration on Friday, August 13 from 11AM until time of service at 12 Noon at GEORGE P. KALAS FUNERAL HOME, 6160 Oxon Hill Rd., Oxon Hill, MD. Interment Cedar Hill Cemetery. A memorial service for her Asbury community will be held at Asbury Solomons Island on Aug. 20 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Asbury-Solomons Benevolent Care Funding, Asbury Foundation, 11100 Asbury Circle, Solomons, MD 20688.
