alter "Ben" Young of Edgewater, MD, passed away on April 10, 2015 after a brave fight against his second bout with cancer.
Born in Greenville, TX on October 3, 1940, Ben's family moved to Maryland where he graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Leonardtown. He served in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Electrician and later worked and retired from Anne Arundel County Government as an automotive/heavy duty mechanic. During his time with the County, Ben was a member of AFSCME 582. He also served as shop steward and as a board member of AFL-CIO Council 67. For the past seven years, he worked as a mechanic for the A.A. County Recreation and Parks, Southern Parks Maintenance Division.
Ben enjoyed traveling and loved talking with everyone. His greatest passion was old cars and restoring his '62 T-bird.
He was the beloved husband of Melissa Young; father of Matthew, Douglas and Robert Young, Christenna Lester and Barbara Jo Young; grandfather of Miles Young, Gabe Emilio, and Christopher, Andrew and Heath Young; brother of Harmon Young, Patsy Clark and the late Wiley and John David Young.
A memorial gathering will be held on Thursday, April 16 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 17 at 10 a.m. at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
